ABOUT US

We're People Pillar and we like to think we're a little different.

We're an independent HR consultancy based in Kent, but there's quite a bit more to us than contracts, policies and knowing our way around employment law.

Built From Scratch and Still Growing

People Pillar started during lockdown in 2020 when the world was trying to understand furlough! Julia decided to build the kind of HR consultancy she'd want to work with herself.

Having spent years working in HR across different industries, she knows that businesses need more than someone who could quote employment law or produce a beautifully formatted policy. They needed experienced people who would get to know their business, understand the bigger picture and be willing to challenge their thinking when necessary.

So she built People Pillar from scratch. Today, we're a small but mighty team, bringing together different specialisms, experience and perspectives to support the businesses we work with. We've grown considerably since those early days, but we've been careful not to lose the personal approach that makes People Pillar what it is.

And while Julia remains very much the face of the business, she's also the driving force behind many of our ideas and ambitions. She's always looking ahead, exploring new ways we can support clients and encouraging the team to think beyond what's expected of an HR consultancy.

We Like to Get to Know Our Clients. Properly.

Of course, we do all the HR essentials (and we're rather good at it), but what really matters to us is getting to know the businesses we work with, understanding what they're trying to achieve and helping them make decisions that are right for both their business and their people.

We like proper conversations, honest advice and relationships that go beyond the occasional HR query. Because when you really understand a business, you can make a much bigger difference.

Our consultants have spent time working from clients' offices, joined their strategy days and become trusted sounding boards for business owners and managers. We even sit on the board for some businesses acting as HR Director.

Sometimes a conversation happens in a meeting room. Sometimes it's a quick WhatsApp message or a catch-up over coffee and cake. It's all part of building relationships where clients feel comfortable picking up the phone, sharing what's really going on and asking for advice before something becomes a bigger problem.

And because we care about our clients, we won't always simply agree with them. If we think there's a better way to handle something, we'll say so. That might mean asking an awkward question, challenging a decision or encouraging someone to consider how an employee might feel on the receiving end of it.

We care about the success of the businesses we support, and we care about the people who work in them. We'd much rather help a client make a thoughtful decision now than help them deal with the consequences of a rushed one later.

Julia, founder of People Pillar

There's a Lot More to HR Than You Might Think

When people think of HR, they often picture boring contracts, policies, disciplinary meetings and somebody reminding them to complete their cyber security training. And yes, those things are important. We help businesses with them every day.

But our work goes much further. We help businesses grow and scale, develop their managers, navigate significant changes and make sure their people and organisational structures can keep up with their ambitions.

That might mean supporting a business through a restructure, helping a founder stop being the person every decision depends on, or working with a team to understand why they keep rubbing each other up the wrong way. It could also be holding a business owner's hand when they take on their first employee because it's really exciting and scary in equal measures!

Sometimes we're helping to resolve a difficult situation. Other times, we're helping a business prepare for an exciting next chapter. We enjoy both.

Because our job isn't simply to help businesses manage the people they employ. It's to help them build businesses where people can do their best work.

The People Behind People Pillar

One of the things we're proudest of is the team we've built. Our consultants bring experience from different industries and specialisms, which means there's a lot of knowledge to draw on when a client needs support.

And while our consultancy team is busy looking after clients, our business support team is working behind the scenes to keep things moving and make sure the experience of working with us is a good one.

We're a close-knit team, and we genuinely enjoy what we do.

Don't Just Take Our Word for It

We can tell you what we're like to work with, but our clients are probably better placed to do that.

People Pillar client testimonial

I thoroughly enjoyed it the session People Pillar delivered, but more importantly our team did and got so much out of it. Many of them commented on how much they enjoyed your delivery and approach.

I am certain it has given us good awareness and some useful tools for communicating better in the future.
