HR AUDITS
HR Audit for Your Business
A fresh pair of eyes on your HR. Without the scary clipboard.
We'll look at how you're currently managing your people, review what's in place and help you understand where things could be improved.
Let's Talk About an HR Audit
When you're busy running a business, it's easy for HR policies, processes and paperwork to slip down the priority list. Things change, teams grow and the way you've always done something might not be the best way to do it anymore.
But how do you know what's working well, what needs attention and whether there are any risks you haven't spotted? That's where an HR audit can help.
At People Pillar, we take a practical, supportive approach to HR audits. And don't worry, we're not turning up to catch you out. We're there to help you understand where you stand, recognise what you're already doing well and work out what makes sense for your business.
Sometimes that means a few straightforward recommendations. Other times, an audit can be the starting point for a more detailed people plan that supports your business over the next 12 months and beyond.
Let's Talk About an HR AuditTaking a Closer Look at Your People Practices
An HR audit gives us the opportunity to look beyond individual issues and understand how the different parts of your HR fit together.
Depending on your business and what you need, we might review:
- Employment contracts and documentation, checking that the right documents are in place and identifying anything that needs reviewing or updating. (More on our employment contracts and handbooks support.)
- HR policies and procedures, looking at how you manage things like absence, disciplinary matters, grievances and other employee issues.
- Employee records and HR administration, understanding how information is managed, maintained and accessed.
- Recruitment and onboarding, reviewing how you bring people into the business and set them up for success.
- Performance and development, exploring how expectations are communicated, performance is managed and employees are supported to develop.
- Management practices, looking at whether managers have the guidance, confidence and processes they need to manage their teams.
- People risks and compliance, identifying areas where your current approach may leave the business exposed.
We won't assume every business needs the same level of review. We'll discuss what you're looking to achieve and agree the scope of the audit before we begin.
So, What Happens After the Audit?
This is where an HR audit becomes really useful. We'll talk you through what we've found, explain anything that needs attention and help you understand what matters most.
You might discover that most things are in pretty good shape and there are just a few areas worth improving. Or we might identify some gaps that need addressing more urgently. Either way, you won't be left with a report full of HR terminology and no idea what to do with it.
Depending on what the audit tells us, the next steps could include:
A Few Practical Improvements
Straightforward recommendations you can take away and work through.
Addressing Immediate Risks
Identifying what needs attention first and agreeing how best to tackle it.
Improving Existing Processes
Making everyday HR responsibilities easier and more consistent.
A Longer-Term People Plan
Creating a clear set of priorities for the next 12 months or beyond, aligned with where you want to take the business.
And if you'd like help putting those recommendations into practice, we can talk about that too, whether that's a one-off project or ongoing HR support.
The aim isn't to create more work for the sake of it. It's to help you focus your time and resources on the things that will make a real difference.
We're Here to Help, Not Judge
We know the word 'audit' can make people a little nervous. You might be worried about what we'll find, whether you've missed something important or how much work it's going to create.
But businesses evolve, employment law changes and even well-run organisations can find that some of their HR practices haven't quite kept pace. Our job is to help you understand that, without making you feel like you've been called into the headteacher's office.
We'll listen, ask questions and take the time to understand why things are done the way they are. We'll also be honest with you. If something needs changing, we'll explain why. And if something is already working well, we'll tell you that too.
Because a useful HR audit isn't about finding as many problems as possible. It's about giving you a clearer picture of your business and the confidence to make informed decisions.
