WORKPLACE MEDIATION
Workplace Mediation
Helping people work through conflict and find a way forward.
At People Pillar, we can help you manage workplace conflict through mediation, bringing an impartial perspective and the experience to guide conversations that might otherwise be difficult to have.
Let's Talk About Mediation
When relationships at work break down, it can have a real impact on everyone involved, including the wider team. And while you might want to step in and sort things out, it's not always easy to know how to approach the situation without making it worse.
We understand that there's often more going on beneath the surface than people initially let on. We take the time to listen, understand different perspectives and help those involved find a way to work together more effectively.
Let's Talk About MediationSometimes People Just Need a Little Help Finding Their Way Forward
Workplace disagreements can start over something relatively small but become harder to resolve the longer they're left unaddressed.
Mediation gives people the opportunity to talk about what's happening, understand each other's perspective and work towards a solution, with support from someone who isn't directly involved.
Mediation can be helpful when you're dealing with:
- Personality clashes: when different approaches or ways of working are causing friction.
- Communication breakdowns: when people have stopped talking, or every conversation seems to end badly.
- Ongoing disagreements: when the same issues keep resurfacing without being resolved.
- Difficult working relationships: between colleagues, managers or members of a team.
- Tension following a complaint or grievance: when relationships need attention after a difficult situation.
- Conflict affecting the wider team: when disagreements are starting to impact morale, collaboration or the working environment.
Not every disagreement needs formal mediation. Sometimes a well-managed conversation, with a little support from someone outside the situation, can make a real difference. And where formal fact-finding is needed, a workplace investigation may be more appropriate. We'll help you understand what approach might be most appropriate.
It's About Listening, Understanding and Finding a Way Forward
When people are upset or frustrated, they don't always feel able to explain what's bothering them. And even when they do, the other person might not really hear what they're saying. That's where having someone independent of the disagreement can help.
Our approach is calm, approachable and centred around the people involved.
Making Sure Everyone Feels Heard
We take the time to understand each person's perspective, without jumping to conclusions or deciding who's right and who's wrong. People are more likely to engage in a difficult conversation when they feel they've genuinely been listened to.
Helping People Have the Conversations They've Been Avoiding
Sometimes people need a little help saying what they mean, hearing how their behaviour affects others or understanding a situation from a different point of view. We help create an environment where those conversations can happen constructively and respectfully.
Finding Practical Ways to Move Forward
Mediation isn't about forcing people to become best friends. It's about helping them agree how they can work together, communicate more effectively and move forward. That might mean rebuilding trust, agreeing some boundaries or simply understanding what needs to change.
It's Not Always an Easy Conversation. That's Where We Come In.
When people have fallen out at work, getting them around a table to talk things through can be difficult. Particularly if they've already tried and things haven't gone well.
We know how to handle those conversations without making people feel uncomfortable or putting them on the defensive. We'll take the time to build trust with everyone involved, understand what's really causing the difficulty and help people talk about things they might otherwise avoid.
Sometimes that means asking a question nobody else has wanted to ask. Other times, it means giving someone the space to explain themselves properly.
We won't take sides or push people towards an agreement they're not comfortable with. Our role is to help them have a productive conversation and find a way forward that works for them.

Let's Work Out the Best Way Forward
If you're dealing with conflict at work, you might not know whether mediation is the right answer. That's absolutely fine.
We'll start by listening to what's been happening, who is involved and what you've already tried. From there, we can talk through whether an informal facilitated conversation, workplace mediation or another approach may be more appropriate.
Where mediation is suitable and everyone agrees to take part, we'll explain how the process would work and what you can expect. And if mediation isn't the right route, we'll be honest about that too. For broader HR advice, our ongoing HR support may be a better fit.

We're proud of the relationships we build with the businesses we support. Here's what some of them have to say about working with us.
Kate Armitage
I thoroughly enjoyed it the session People Pillar delivered, but more importantly our team did and got so much out of it. Many of them commented on how much they enjoyed your delivery and approach.
I am certain it has given us good awareness and some useful tools for communicating better in the future.
